Massive explosions in Lebanon ‘s port of Beirut rock, hundred of people hurt in blast

Beirut: On Tuesday (August 4, 2020), major explosions shook Beirut, injuring hundreds as glass was broken and balconies collapsed from impact, witnesses from Reuters reported.

Lebanon’s state news agency NNA and two security sources said the explosion had taken place in the port area where explosives housing warehouses operate. What caused the explosion, or what kind of explosives were in the warehouses, was not immediately clear.

“I saw a fireball and smoke fluttering over Beirut. People were screaming and running, bleeding. Balconies were blown off buildings. Glass shattered in high-rise buildings, and dropped to the ground,” a witness from Reuters said.

Local broadcaster LBC quoted the minister of health as saying that there was a “very large number” of casualties and a great deal of damage. TV channel Al Mayadeen said hundreds were wounded.

Another witness from Reuters said she saw thick gray smoke near the port area and then heard an explosion and saw flames of fire and black smoke, “All the windows in downtown area are shattered and wounded people are wandering around. It’s complete chaos.”

However the government of Lebanon is on alert. All citizens of the country are advised to be careful for few days.
